May 19 2010
OAMFT's Peterborough - Mid Eastern Area Meeting
Note from M. MacFarlane Area Rep

While we all enjoyed refreshments (coffee and cookies), Ed Santana, Executive Director  and Marion Goertz, President brought us up to date on recent events affecting our association.  Ed talked a bit about the new Psychotherapy Act and where things are at with the Transitional Council.  The Council has already met several times, and OAMFT is fortunate to have some strong representation on the Council (although all Council members are focused on representing the public, not any specific organization).  We also heard about about some of OAMFT's lobbying efforts with the Department of Defense, about how the HST might affect us, as well as about a number of other exciting initiatives that OAMFT is involved with.

There was some excellent discussion from participants about some of the challenges facing our profession and about ways OAMFT could help address those challenges.  Marion and Ed will be taking these viewpoints and suggestions back to our board and looking for ways to implement these suggestions.

Announcing Ed Santana, MA, Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Ontario Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (OAMFT) are pleased to announce the appointment of  Ed Santana, MA, to the position of Executive Director. Ed brings to this position both clinical experience as a marriage and family therapist and also training and acquired expertise in the areas of government and public relations and corporate consulting.

Prior to his move to Canada, Ed provided therapy and treatment services to children, families and couples in California, in support of their struggles with such issues as substance abuse, stress disorders, ADHD and domestic violence. He valued both the cultural and resource diversity of the people he felt honoured to serve for seventeen years.

Before qualifying as an Associate Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy he worked for a number of years as a corporate consultant on matters of organizational development and communication programs, strategic marketing, career counselling and leadership development. As press secretary, spokesperson, speechwriter and senior advisor to two Members of the US Congress, Ed co-ordinated national media appearances, organized press conferences and built effective, collaborative relationships to support focussed initiatives. Accomplished in the field of technological communication, he is an award-winning website co-ordinator and has been recognized for establishing innovative, online chat forums for national leaders. Ed served as part of the senior management team for one of North America's prime online companies where he helped build strategic community, industry and government alliances, and guided corporate promotional, communication and restructuring initiatives.  Ed also served for a number of years as a Senior Account Executive for a major public relations agency handling public affairs and business-critical communication strategies, including the design and implementation of marketing and public policy shaping undertakings for major international clients.

Ed is presently enrolled in a PhD program in the field of Depth Psychology. He and his partner Dinarte share their home with "Buddy" an eight-year old chocolate Labrador Retriever.

We feel confident that Ed brings the required skill set, background and collaborative perspective to enrich and strengthen our already solid OAMFT organizational team. His clinical experience and on-going training, coupled with his acquired expertise in the areas of government, public and corporate relations have shaped his competence as a skilled communicator, strategist and consensus builder.

Welcome Ed!
